Potential role of statins in the intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage

Abstract: Statins are used in primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular episodes. Most of recent studies regard ischemic stroke. There are more emerging results of studies suggesting usefulness of these drugs in the other types of stroke e.g. intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Searching for new methods of treatment is important, because both ICH and SAH lead to poor prognosis and severe psychomotor disability. The unquestionable role of inflammatory factors in the pathogenesis of … Show more

“…Statins are known to inhibit the migration and proliferation of white blood cells into the blood vessels, activate cytokines, upregulate the expression and activity of endothelial nitric oxide synthase, improve endothelial reactivity, increase cerebral blood flow, and exert antioxidant effects. It is therefore not surprising that the synergistic effects of multiple mechanisms enhance the prognosis of patients with aSAH (Kotlega et al, 2015 ; Arati et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Theoretically, the beneficial effect of statins may result from the pleiotropic properties that reflect the interactions within the immune system and inflammatory molecules. This group of drugs is proven to exert multidirectional effects, including effects on reactive oxygen species development, clot formation, and brain plasticity [17]. The first observations linking the histological findings and the presence of inflammation in AF were presented by Frustaci et al [18].…”

“…It is most frequently occurs following the rupture of an intracranial aneurysm 144. Mortality rates are extremely high, estimated at between 40% and 50%,145 with incident rates of up between 2 and 32/100 000 146. SAH causes early and late brain injury, the latter being associated with delayed cerebral vasospasm.…”
