Powder Metallurgical Processing of Intermetallic Gamma Titanium Aluminides

Abstract: Intermetallic γ‐TiAl‐based alloys represent a new class of light‐weight structural materials for use at high temperatures. Because of their unique properties these alloys are considered for applications in aerospace and automotive industries. During the last decade both, alloy development and materials processing progressed significantly. New materials and powder metallurgy (PM) have formed a symbiosis since many decades. In fact, PM is an ancient technology which has been used for the processing for almost ev… Show more

“…38 Mixtures of 80 vol% of Al-12Si and 20 vol% of TNM gas atomized powders (GAP) were prepared by room temperature mechanical milling using a Retsch PM400 planetary ball mill (Haan, Germany) to have a Al-12Si-TNMC with a homogeneous distribution of reinforcement in the matrix. The milling was carried out for 2 h with hardened steel balls and vials with a rotational speed of 100 rotations per minute (rpm) and a ball to powder ratio of 10:1.…”

“…3a). This can be attributed to the extreme high cooling rate in the range of 10 5 K/s [1] which obviously provides not enough time for ordering.…”

“…Gas-atomised spherical powders of Ti-45Al-5Nb-xC (x = 0, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) and Ti-45Al-10Nb (all compositions in at.%) were produced in-house using the plasma melting induction guided gas atomisation (PIGA) technique [1]. The impurity levels in nitrogen and oxygen ranged around 100 mg/g and 400 mg/g, respectively and were analyzed using a conventional LECO melt extraction system.…”

“…The lack of room temperature ductility is the main reason why these intermetallics have to be produced by non-conventional and costly production routes. This involves powder metallurgy [2,3], near-net-shape casting from very high temperatures [4], selective laser melting [5,6], electron beam melting [7] and hot forging methods [8].…”
