Powdery mildew on hazelnut (Corylus avellana) caused by Erysiphe corylacearum in Iran

Abstract: Common hazel (Corylus avellana) is an economically valuable nut crop worldwide. Phyllactinia guttata is a widespread powdery mildew species on this host in many hazelnut‐producing countries including Iran. Here, we report a new powdery mildew species on C. avellana in Iran. Hazelnut trees showing severe powdery mildew infection symptoms on leaves and fruit clusters were collected from forest areas in the Ahar (East Azerbaijan province) and the Khodaafarin (Ardabil province) regions of Iran. Based on a polyphas… Show more

“…Due to analysis of literature information, it becomes clear that over the past few years E. corylacearum has gone beyond its original range. In 2013, the fungus was recorded in Turkey (Sezer et al, 2017), in 2016 in Azerbaijan (Abasova et al, 2018), in 2017 in Iran (Arzanlou et al, 2018). It was noted that in Turkey, this powdery mildew spread very quickly in the Black Sea regions and now it causes significant damage to host plants.…”

“…Total fungi DNA was extracted from fungal hyphae and conidia by the protocol of Arzanlou et al (2018). Briefly, under stereomicroscope a small patch of fresh and newly developed fungal powdery mass from the abaxial leaf surface was picked up using a sterile inoculation needle and dipped into PCR tubes containing 50 μl TE buffer, then crushed with sterile pipette tip.…”

“…Universal set primers ITS1 (5'-TCCGTA GGTGAACCTGCGG-3′) and ITS4 (5'-TCCTCCGC TTATTGATATGC-3′) were used to amplify parts of the rDNA internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) using polymerase chain reaction (White et al 1990). The reaction mixture and PCR cycling conditions used were the same at Arzanlou et al (2018). PCR products were subjected to electrophoresis in 1% agarose gel in 1X TAE buffer.…”
