Power Electronics course: Analysis and evaluation of the educational software and the environment learning

Abstract: This paper presents the analysis and evaluation of the Power Electronics course at São Paulo State University-UNESP-Campus of Ilha Solteira(SP)-Brazil, which includes the usage of interactive Java simulations tools and an educational software to aid the teaching of power electronic converters. This platform serves as an oriented course for the lectures and supplementary support for laboratory experiments in the power electronics courses. The simulation tools provide an interactive and dynamic way to visualize … Show more

“…Commonly used are also different versions of Spice simulation programs, such as LTSpice or PSpice in Palestine [2], in the United States [23,37,39,49], Brasil [46,55], and elsewhere [21,33,60]. Yamin et al interestingly describe a computerized educational approach, focusing on PSpice simulations of single pulse thyristor circuits with load variations [60].…”

“…The literature review reveals that the laboratory practice curricula of power electronics subjects at the undergraduate level are mostly focused on the basic topics of power electronics. These include fundamental singlephase and three-phase rectifier circuits, simple DC/DC switch-mode power supply (SMPS) circuits, as well as basic inverter circuits (H-bridge) [12,52,55,59,60]. Practically none of the authors report of laboratory practices in power electronics that would deal with more advanced and complex systems, such as high-voltage DC transmission (HVDC), static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs), and other similar devices.…”

“…In the hands-on simulation experiments, a simple simulation subject and a more difficult simulation assignment are designed aimed at each specific knowledge point. These cases are executed in three procedures: (1) Before class, students simulate the simple subject. (2) In class, students demonstrate their simulation results.…”

“…The fundamental theory on MEMS design is quite important and is the most difficult part in MEMS learning. A good approach to improve theoretical study is using teaching facilities such as simulation to make the abstract theory concrete and vivid [1][2].…”

“…The second major benefit is the exposure to a modeling and simulation environment that may be useful in future engineering tasks. The use of simulation in complex systems, such as power electronics classes have proven as a beneficial educating tool as discussed in [2] and [3]. By incorporating an easily understandable simulation environment into the traditional lecture material, students can visualize the dynamics and static response without the need to understand the complicated underlying mathematical relationships.…”
