Power quality in distribution networks with electric vehicle charging - a research methodology based on field tests and real data

Abstract: Tn this paper power quality measurement results of electric vehicle (EV) battery charging are presented. The power quality issues of EV charging are a rising concern among power utilities, as a rapid penetration of EVs on automotive markets is expected to happen in a few years to come. For evaluating the impact of EV charging a series of field measurements are conducted and harmonic current profiles based on the measurements were created. Paper also discusses the calculation methodology of harmonic current flo… Show more

“…In order to assess the load profile, some assumptions must to be made. Based on [36], it is assumed thatduring the first 60 s of the charging event the power is ramped up to the maximum value and after that, the power is constant until the end of the charging. If the charging time is long and/or the battery is near full state in the beginning of the charging process, the charging power starts to decrease when the state‐of‐charge (SOC) of the battery approaches full state.…”

“…Measurement of power quality issues needs more technical expertise in measuring parameters that decide the existence of power quality issues in distribution systems due to EV penetration. A series of field measurements is conducted to obtain the harmonic component in the current of the distribution network is observed [89].…”

“…Realistic representation of EV charging demand is needed to accurately examine the effectiveness of innovative EM approaches. The studies in the literature are mainly based on either direct use of charging profile data collected from field demonstrations [17] or deterministic charging scenarios built on general assumptions [18]. However, these conventional methodologies have some drawbacks.…”
