PQMS - power quality monitoring system: improve power systems through IEDS

Abstract: This paper discusses a new concept in power quality monitoring through the use of digital multimeters specially designed for use in circuits with nonlinear loads, together with other intelligent electronic devices. These devices allow utilities to monitor and analyze relevant disturbances in the distribution system. Interconnected equipment on a high-speed communications network provides the basis for an electrical power quality monitoring system. This system is a powerful tool for evaluating and minimizing th… Show more

“…On the other hand, the Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) are included in IES to protect the loads or parts of the IES. As for the loads, in this specific case, the applied to protect the Three Phase Induction Motors (TPIM), after the detection of an event that could damage the system [4]. In this scenario, for the analyzers and multimeters, no assignment of any function or immediate action task on the load (in this case, on the TPIM).…”

“…Today, there are several moderately powerful hardware-based commercial solutions from different companies (Fluke, Dranetz-BMI, etc), that can do the job locally. Web based solutions are being deployed to collect sensor information and send it to central servers in datacenters for processing and analysis [3,6,10,28,15], and other tools for displaying data generated by sensor equipment [22]. Present and future trends indicate that interconnected sensors through WAN, PAN, LAN, 3G networks and Smartgrid projects will be the focus of more and more efforts in the scientific community.…”
