Energy systems modelling and design are a critical aspect of planning and development among researchers, electricity planners, infrastructure developers, utilities, decision-makers, and other relevant stakeholders. However, to achieve a sustainable energy supply, the energy planning approach needs to integrate some key dimensions. Importantly, these dimensions are necessary to guide the simulation and evaluation. It is against this backdrop that this paper focuses on the simulation and analysis approaches for sustainable planning, design, and development of microgrids based on clean energy resources. The paper first provides a comprehensive review of the existing simulation tools and approaches used for designing energy generation technologies. It then discusses and compares the traditional strategies and the emerging trends in energy systems simulation based on the software employed, the type of problem to be solved, input parameters provided, and the expected output. The paper introduces a practical simulation framework for sustainable energy planning, which is based on the social-technical-economic-environmental-policy (STEEP) model. The STEEP represents a holistic sustainability model that considers the key energy systems planning dimensions compared to the traditional techno-economic model used in several existing simulation tools and analyses. The paper provides insights into data-driven analysis and energy modelling software development applications.

The high penetration of distributed generation (DG) units with their power-electronic interfaces may lead to various power quality problems, such as excessive harmonic distortions and increased non-sinusoidal power losses. In this paper, the probabilistic hosting capacity (PHC) due to the high penetration of photovoltaic units in a non-sinusoidal power distribution system is investigated. A C-type harmonic filter is proposed, to maximize the harmonic-constrained PHC. An optimization problem is formulated by using a Monte Carlo simulation, taking into account various uncertain parameters, such as the intermittent output power of the DGs, background voltage harmonics, load alteration, and the filter parameters’ variations. In addition, different operational constraints have been considered, such as the bus voltage, line thermal capacity, power factor, and individual and total harmonic distortion limits. A swarm-based, meta-heuristic optimization algorithm known as the hybrid particle swarm optimization and gravitational search algorithm (PSOGSA) has been examined for the optimal design of the proposed filter. Besides, other optimization algorithms were examined for validation of the solution. The PHC results obtained are compared with the conventional deterministic HC (DHC) results, and it is found that the PHC levels are higher than those obtained by conservative HC procedures, practical rules of thumb, and the DHC approaches.

The power quality of electrical grids is becoming an important issue worldwide. The electrical grid has to deliver sinusoidal voltages and currents without frequency or amplitude variations. However, the connection of non-linear loads generates harmonics that degrade the grid quality. The presence of harmonics in the load currents has many negative consequences and can distort the voltage waveform at the point of common coupling (PCC). Thus, it is essential to mitigate the harmonics in order to maintain a suitable grid quality. This is a shared responsibility between energy suppliers, manufacturers of electric and electronic equipment, and users. In this context, this work presents, for each stakeholder, a comprehensive analysis of their responsibilities and the standards that they should meet. Additionally, this paper reviews the most common types of filters used to comply with the applicable standards in industrial applications. Finally, in order to prove that active power filters allow maintaining good power quality in all types of grid, commercially available active power filters were installed in three different grids contexts: an office building, a factory, and a stadium with a large number of LEDs. The experimental results obtained were used to evaluate the impact of active filters on grid quality. This review would help users to overcome their grid distortion problems.
