Thanks to the recent rapid technological advancement in IoT usage, there is a need for students to learn IoT-based concepts using a dedicated experimental platform. Furthermore, being forced into remote learning due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there is an urgent need for innovative learning methods. From our perspective, a learning platform should be reconfigurable to accommodate multiple applications and remotely accessible at any time, from anywhere, and on any connected device. Considering that many of the university courses are now held online, the reliability and scalability of the system become critical. This paper presents the design and development of a wireless configurable myRIO-based sensor node that connects to SystemLink Cloud. The sensors that were used are for ambient light, temperature, and proximity. A graphical programming environment (G-LabVIEW) and related APIs were used for rapid concept-to-development process. Distinct applications have been developed for the instructor and students, respectively. The students can select which sensor and application to run on the system and observe the measurements on the local student’s application or the cloud platform at a specific moment. They can also read the data on the cloud platform and use them in their LabVIEW application. In the context of remote education, we strongly believe that this platform is and will be suitable for the COVID and Post-COVID eras as well because it creates a much better remote laboratory experience for students. In conclusion, the system that was developed is innovative because it is software reconfigurable from the device, from the instructor’s application and cloud via a web browser, it is intuitive, and it has a user-friendly interface. It meets most of the necessary requirements in the current era, being also highly available and scalable in the cloud.

As the accreditation guidelines of various accreditation bodies emphasize, acquiring psychomotor skills is a very important part of learning outcomes in a chemical engineering degree. Thus, it is crucial to ensure the effective achievement of these skills, even with limited physical delivery during this pandemic period. This challenge can be overcome by adopting virtual lab experiments and simulations, which enable the students to understand the concepts, important relationships between the variables, and the potential impact of manipulating the variables on the process operation. However, many simulation software programs cannot be purchased by students individually as the license is quite expensive. Hence, using TeamViewer software as a remote learning tool has significantly benefited students accessing license simulation software in the university from wherever they are with an internet connection, a valid ID, and a password. This paper highlighted the effectiveness of employing TeamViewer as a remote learning tool to facilitate online laboratory practices in two chemical engineering courses of CHE263 (Material and Energy Balance) and CHE249 (Separation Processes). The experimentation and data analysis showed that the proposal significantly increased students' psychomotor skills while enhancing their understanding. The learning that was attained in the face-to-face classroom format and the learning that was attained using the suggested remote laboratory were found to have similar outcomes. This study will benefit other educators who need an alternative tool to do an online laboratory that uses system software and needs remote access.

The development of an on-line process control system in the Industry is a major requirement in the context of the efficiency of machines and improving the quality of production during the Covid-19 period. As well as in the learning system and practicum students are required to be able to study independently, and lecturers must be able to develop themselves in on-line learning methods. The on-line learning process is not just to transfer learning modules to students, but must be able to guide students in an unlimited time, whenever students need an explanation of the material provided. TeamViewer is an application that provides a solution that is used to remotely control another PC or laptop. By knowing the ID and password are provided by TeamViewer on the PC that want to remote. Then, it just entered the TeamViewer application installed on the PC. The use of this team viewer was tested against the control of the beverage bottle filling process. The result is that by using Android the process of controlling beverage bottle filling. It turns out that, it can be operated to fill beverage bottles for different size, namely by setting the data delay on the program 3.2 seconds for the 120 ml bottle size, 4.0 seconds for the 200 ml bottle size, and 5.0 seconds for the bottle size of 300 ml.
