Recent research suggests coastal environments may promote human health and wellbeing. This article explores the diverse coastal experiences sought out by residents of two towns in south west England to promote and preserve their personal wellbeing in the context of their everyday lives. It draws on the findings of an in-depth interpretive study conducted from May to November 2013 that examined the relative contribution of varied green and blue space experiences to individual wellbeing through the life course. Personalised activity maps produced using accelerometer and Global Positioning System (GPS) data were used to guide in-depth geo-narrative interviews with a purposive sample of 33 participants. This was combined with a subset of nine case study go-along interviews in places deemed therapeutic by the participants themselves, offering deeper insight into the lived experiences and relationships playing out within such places. Situated in a novel adaptation of the therapeutic landscapes framework, this article explores how symbolic, achievement-oriented, immersive and social experiences contributed to participants' sense of wellbeing in their local coastal areas.Participants expressed particularly strong and often enduring connections to the local coastline, with different coastal stretches perceived to cater for varied therapeutic needs and interests, at multiple scales and intensities. The findings suggest the need for greater acknowledgement of people's emotional, deeply embodied and often shared connections to the coast within coastal management policy and practice, both nationally and internationally. Importantly, such efforts should recognise the fluid, dynamic nature of this land-sea boundary, and the valued therapeutic experiences linked to this fluidity.

“…If the ephemeral, serendipitous or intentional communities that are formed through leisure harness the potential to establish significant, reciprocal relationships based in mutual appreciation, shared affection and loyalty that come to be embraced as family, then it is our job as researchers to examine how these relationships are formed through leisure and how they extend into other domains of life. Much as Dunlap (2009) called for greater inquiry into 'private, grassroots efforts to rediscover the importance of leisure for the well-being of individuals and communities' (p. 432), we challenge the leisure academy to go beyond community studies and embrace the family dialogue as a very real, and necessary, concept in understanding how the passionate consumption of leisure brings unrelated people together (Harrington, 2015) to levels of connections not often considered in the discipline. The fanbase of Jerry Joseph & the Jackmormons is evidence to this need.…”

This study explores the ambiguous term 'community' and how close groups of people come to form one. By extracting two core elements, often attributed to designations of community, mutual affection and shared appreciation, this study elucidates how fans of the rock band Jerry Joseph & the Jackmormons established close bonds referred to as family through their lengthy and passionate involvement in the leisure outlet of a music scene. Due to extensive personal involvements in various music scenes, fans ultimately came to find the music and coterie of Jerry Joseph & the Jackmormons as a place where they could address their individual needs in the comfort of like-minded others who, over time, came to define the closeness of their relationships as family through shared love of music, interaction and care for each other's well-being.

The World Health Organization (WHO) regards the concept of health as individual psychosocial well-being based not only on physical, but psychological, social and environmental factors. Due to the long time spend at school, that context exerts a strong influence on the well-being of children and adolescents and plays an important role in their physical and mental health. Good mental condition in childhood and adolescence is a prerequisite for optimal development, effective learning, the formation of satisfying interpersonal relationships, and for maintaining physical and mental health in adult life. The aim of this paper is to describe the concept of socio-psychological well-being at school and major factors that influence it. Research about well-being of Polish adolescents will also be reviewed. Some preventive and educational implications will be drawn. Childhood and adolescence are crucial periods for the promotion of mental health and the prevention of mental disorders. The article is based on the assumption that the school environment is one of the key elements affecting the subjective psychological well-being of pupils. The school context is also necessary for taking appropriate preventive action and support school-age children in developing appropriate competences.
