Pre-Control Strategies for Downstream Bus Service Reliability With Traffic Signal

Abstract: As an undesired behavior of the transport system, headway fluctuation or even bus bunching reduce reliability of bus stop service for waiting passengers. This paper proposes a pre-control method to improve the balance of service intervals at downstream stop through an adjustment of green time for bus passing, in which priority and delay of bus passing can be achieved. The proposed pre-control strategies at intersection are triggered based on prediction of service intervals at downstream stop to select priority… Show more

“…Jianping Wu [19] studied the bus priority system under three different pre-signal conditions. Hu Zhang and Shidong Liang [20] proposed a pre-control method to improve the balance of service intervals at downstream stops, through an adjustment of green light time for buses passing, by which priority and delays of traffic for buses to pass through can be achieved. K Long [21] analyzed the bus priority control at a single intersection, using the average delay and per capita delay as the evaluation index.…”

“…Furthermore, Kim et al [15] considered the dwell time uncertainty and traffic queue to construct a model that reflects the actual traffic flow. Zhang et al [16,17], Ding et al [18], and Zeng et al [19] studied the TSP provision by predicting the arrival or dwell time in advance considering the actual arrival of the bus at an intersection.…”

“…In addition to the aspects mentioned above, many TSP applications benefit only from the target individual intersections [27]. Transit arrival times at downstream intersections are often overlooked [28]. Such operations may result in ineffective transit priority which greatly affecting system reliability, and the extra green duration at the upstream intersection may be wasted [29].…”
