Precise Synthesis of Poly(methyl methacrylate) Brush with Well-Controlled Stereoregularity Using a Surface-Initiated Living Anionic Polymerization Method

Abstract: Densely grafted polymer brushes, which consist of endtethered chains that are predominantly oriented perpendicular to the substrate, show a number of unique functional properties due to their highly organized structure. Controlling the stereoregularity of the main chain while maintaining a high grafting density offers further opportunities to increase the density of functional sites through the formation of cavities within the brush structure. Concentrated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes with well-con… Show more

“…One strategy to increase the solubility is to use solubilizing agents, such as polymer materials that can complex with fullerene. PMMA exhibits helical conformation in solution and is capable of encapsulating fullerene within cavities to promote its solubility in polar organic solvent, [30][31][32] as illustrated in Fig. 1a.…”

“…Grafting from approach may entail the use of anionic or cationic or free radical polymerization in the functionalization of NPs. SI-anionic and cationic polymerizations are excellent routes in providing polymer grafted nanoparticles (PGNPs) with predetermined molecular weights of narrow dispersity [ 60 , 61 , 62 , 63 ]. However, the complexity of the experimental techniques limits their broad use [ 64 , 65 , 66 , 67 ].…”

“…Although atactic polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) does not form any specific structure, syndiotactic PMMA forms a helical structure, with 1 nm inner diameter and 2.3 nm outer diameter, in organic solvents. The syndiotactic PMMA encapsulates isotactic PMMA and functional molecules in their helical cavity . In this work, we report the preparation of a novel block copolymer consisting of syndiotactic PMMA and polymethacrylate‐functionalized POSS (PMAPOSS), designated as ( st ‐PMMA‐ b ‐PMAPOSS), and the encapsulation behavior of the st‐ PMMA segments in the block copolymer.…”
