As the world’s oceans continue to undergo drastic changes, understanding the role of key species therein will become increasingly important. To explore the role of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua Gadidae) in the ecosystem, we reviewed biological interactions between cod and its prey, predators and competitors within six ecosystems taken from a broad geographic range: three are cod‐capelin (Mallotus villosus Osmeridae) systems towards cod’s northern Atlantic limit (Barents Sea, Iceland and Newfoundland–Labrador), two are more diverse systems towards the southern end of the range (North Sea and Georges Bank–Gulf of Maine), and one is a species‐poor system with an unusual physical and biotic environment (Baltic Sea). We attempt a synthesis of the role of cod in these six ecosystems and speculate on how it might change in response to a variety of influences, particularly climate change, in a fashion that may apply to a wide range of species. We find cod prey, predators and competitors functionally similar in all six ecosystems. Conversely, we estimate different magnitudes for the role of cod in an ecosystem, with consequently different effects on cod, their prey and predator populations. Fishing has generally diminished the ecological role of cod. What remains unclear is how additional climate variability will alter cod stocks, and thus its role in the ecosystem.

Northern shrimp Pandalus borealis is found in both inshore and offshore areas around Iceland, where it has supported an important commercial fishery. However, in the past 15 yr the northern shrimp population has decreased in size and collapsed in most of the inshore areas. In this study, the importance of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua on northern shrimp stock dynamics was studied by comparing stomach contents of cod between 2 different habitats, inshore and offshore northern shrimp fishery areas. Many prey items were observed in cod stomachs, but only a few dominated. The most important prey types, in decreasing order of importance, included northern shrimp, fish and euphausiids in the inshore area, as opposed to capelin Mallotus villosus, other fish species, northern ambereye Hymenodora glacialis and northern shrimp in the offshore area. Low northern shrimp biomass was observed during periods of high cod density, suggesting that predation by cod affected northern shrimp biomass in both areas. Globally, shrimp stocks are important both economically and ecologically, and this is true for the northern shrimp Pandalus borealis in the Gulf of Maine. Understanding and modeling of shrimp stock dynamics have often posed challenges, leading to the suggestion that inclusion of more multidisciplinary data may help to better elucidate shrimp stock dynamics. Thus, we explored the potential implications of including additional information for northern shrimp biomass estimates by examining fish food habits from the Gulf of Maine. We estimated the consumptive removals by 18 predators of northern shrimp. Summed across all predators, the consumptive removals for northern shrimp in recent years were on the order of 20,000–30,000 metric tons. These estimates are generally conservative based upon consumption model assumptions. Compared with survey indices, the trends in consumptive removals were out of phase in the 1990s but both trended upwards in the early 2000s. Compared with the base assessment model, consumptive removals were of the same order of magnitude, trended similarly, and were two to four times higher than estimates of northern shrimp biomass. Changing the natural mortality (M) parameter in the assessment model to higher levels (M from 0.25 to 0.50 or 0.60) reconciled the difference in estimates of biomass. Our objective was neither to fit a new assessment model nor to provide precise estimates of northern shrimp biomass; rather, we demonstrate that including food habits data as contextual information in such assessments is feasible and should lead to enhanced estimates of M. Improvements in obtaining relative estimates of biomass could then result from these enhanced estimates of M, particularly as it would allow for evaluating the tradeoffs between fishing and predation as sources of northern shrimp removals.
