Predicted and Experimented Acceleration Profile of the Rocket Sled

Abstract: In this paper, the world's fi rst application of hybrid rockets to rocket sled system is described. By using N 2 O oxidizer which has self-pressurizing capability, simple handling and low-cost operation was enabled. On the other hand, accurate prediction of the time-velocity profi le of the rocket sled becomes diffi cult because the thrust curve of the N 2 O hybrid rocket varies with the outside temperature. Based on the preliminary thrust measurement, we predicted the velocity profi le of the rocket sled and … Show more

“…5 An alternative approach to the study of high-speed ground-effect aerodynamics experimentally is via rocket sled methods. 12 In the work of Nakata et al 13,14 using Japan's high-speed test track facility, it was possible to achieve speeds up to Mach 0.6, placing the studies into the compressibility regime but falling short of the critical Mach number. The vast majority of higher speed rocket sled test tracks are located at military installations (e.g.…”

“…The sled was propelled by 4 hybrid rockets along the 300 m-long rail track and decelerated by water braking system. The detail of propulsion and braking system is written in our past reports 2,3) . Total weight at the experiment was 150-200 kg including propulsion system, balance, test models and counter weights.…”
