Predicting Attrition and Engagement in the Treatment of Young Offenders

Abstract: Premature treatment termination in offender treatment is linked to negative consequences for clients, practitioners, and the criminal justice system. Therefore, identifying predictors of treatment attrition is a crucial issue in offender rehabilitation. Most studies on this topic focus on adult offenders; less is known about adolescent offenders. In our study, therapy attrition and engagement were predicted via logistic and linear regression to examine the link between pretreatment variables, engagement, and t… Show more

“…The vast majority of the treated participants ( n = 231, 63.3%) participated in the programs of social–therapeutic prisons. These institutions aim for an overall therapeutic climate and deliver individual and group therapy as well as basic education, professional training, and a stepwise opening with work outside, near the end of the sentence (for more information, see Carl, Schmucker, & Lösel, 2018; Lösel & Egg, 1997). In principle, the social–therapeutic units in Germany are more similar to hierarchic than democratic therapeutic communities in the Anglo-American world (e.g., Lipton, 2010; Shuker & Sullivan, 2010).…”

“…It may be that combinations of secure residential youth care with very short systemic interventions tend to reflect the unsuccessful implementation of treatment of families with whom engagement could not be achieved, leading to lower levels of parental involvement. This way, lower parental involvement could be reflective of a lack of engagement which could lead to attrition, as seen in prior research (Carl et al, 2020).…”

“…The distrust and lack of help-seeking by the participants is supported by Howerton et al (2007) and Jeffreys (2016). Carl et al (2019) report low motivation, young age and substance use all predict attrition in treatment of young offenders, but that engagement reduces the impact. Schiller (2013) advocates a strong therapeutic alliance is required in the treatment of young offenders.…”
