Predicting Condom Use: A Comparison of the Theory of Reasoned Action, the Theory of Planned Behavior and an Extended Model of TPB

Abstract: -It was our goal to give a contribution to the prediction of condom use using socio-cognitive models, comparing classic theories to an extended model. A cross-sectional study was conducted using a questionnaire of self-reported measures. From the students who agreed to participate in the study, 140 were eligible for the full study. A confi rmatory analysis was used to assess the predictive value of the researched model. The model tested had slightly better fi t indexes and predictive value than classic Theorie… Show more

“…A study conducted in Addis Ababa using the theory of planned behavior has showed that its variables were less sufficient in predicting voluntary HIV counseling and testing (Mirkuzie et al, 2011). Another compared the theory of reasoned action, theory of planned behavior, and an extended theory of planned behavior model which demonstrated that the augmented model had slightly better fit indexes and predictive value (Gomes & Nunes, 2017). Therefore, researchers have found it necessary to either combine a number of variables of these aforementioned theories or integrate other important aspects they have not as yet considered, as was the case with the integrated model of behavior prediction (Diteweg et al, 2013).…”

“…The TPB has been utilized previously throughout public health and psychology research in predicting condom use intention and behavior (Carmack & Lewis, 2009;Gibson et al, 2020;Gomes & Nunes, 2017;Montanaro et al, 2018;Morales et al, 2021;Robison-Chadwell, 2017;Turchik & Gidycz, 2012). Gomes and Nunes (2017), found the TPB to be a useful model in predicting condom use intentions among adolescents; and specifically, that attitudes and subjective norms were significantly predictive of condom use. Much of the previous research on the TPB and sexual risk behavior has been conducted on adolescent populations and other special populations (e.g.…”

“…Despite a large amount of research framed by different theoretical models (Espada, et al, 2016;Gomes & Nunes, 2018;Morales, et al, 2018;Plaza-Vidal et al, 2020) and informed by several interventions (Morales, et al, 2019(Morales, et al, , 2020, research has shown that consistent condom use is far from desirable. For example, a cross-national study with Latin American women showed that 4%-20% of the participants never used a condom when having sex (Mejia et al, 2020).…”
