Predicting Outcome of Inpatient Detoxification of Substance Abusers

Abstract: Caution is necessary when applying results of inpatient treatment outcome studies to inpatient detoxification programs. Different factors may play a role in the outcome of detoxification. To improve the rate at which patients in detoxification programs are transferred to longer-term rehabilitation, more attention should be paid to medical conditions and to the direct consequences of drug use, such as withdrawal symptoms and craving during detoxification.

“…We did not find any significant association between demographic characteristics and short-term detoxification outcome, which widely is in line with the results of Hien and Scheier [29] on a sample of women in alcohol and drug detoxification in the USA and with the results of Franken and Hendriks [23] in an inpatient detoxification clinic in the Netherlands. Other studies however report a relationship between discharges against medical advice and being single and attribute this to social isolation and lack of affiliation [30] .…”

“…The drug use patterns in the sample reflect current trends of cocaine abuse in heroin addicts in Spain [e.g. 14 ] and the most commonly abused substances are identical to those of a detoxification sample in Valencia, Spain [11] and in The Hague, the Netherlands [23] . 80% of the sample completed detoxification.…”

“…Despite the efforts to treat substance-dependent patients effectively, treatment dropout rates are generally 450% and most patients subsequently relapse (Miller, 1996;Franken and Hendriks, 1999;Hättenschwiler et al, 2000). The identification of predictors of substance use relapse have been of high interest in addiction research (eg, Miller et al, 1996;Donovan, 1996;McKay, 1999).…”

“…Despite many pharmacological and behavioral efforts, over 50% of these individuals drop out from treatment programs and inevitably relapse (Hattenschwiler et al, 2000;Franken and Hendriks, 1999). Studies identifying key factors that predict relapse are of great use in the addiction field (McKay, 1999, Donovan, 1996.…”
