Predicting Window View Preferences Using the Environmental Information Criteria

Abstract: Daylighting standards provide an assessment method that can be used to evaluate the quality of window views. As part of this evaluation process, designers must achieve five environmental information criteria (location, time, weather, nature, and people) to obtain an excellent view. To the best of our knowledge, these criteria have not yet been verified and their scientific validity remains conjectural. In a two-stage experiment, a total of 451 persons evaluated six window view images. Using machine learning m… Show more

“…As a result, the applicability of the trained classification model is somewhat limited at the current stage, being effective only for the identification and classification of these nine tree types. To augment the model's versatility, robustness, and address the issue of parameter generalization, [51] future research directions will focus on collecting and processing point cloud data from a broader array of tree species across different geographical areas and time frames. This expansion will broaden the model's applicability, further elevating its comprehensiveness and effectiveness in practical forestry applications.…”

“…Some research has focused on the importance of the design of windows as a concern for the eye development of children (Hobday, 2015). In addition to the benefits of incorporating natural light, is the connection to the outside, as a positive effect on the quality of life (Kent, 2022) the view to nature has also been linked with children's wellbeing (Lindemann-Matthies, Benkowitz, & Hellinger, 2021) and learning outcomes (Heschong Mahone Group, 2003). All these studies provide the foundation that must inform architecture and industry (Lee et al, 2022), not only in new designs but mostly in existing buildings.…”

“…The outdoor view in the model is based on a location in Albany, California that satisfies highquality view content criteria, as defined by the EN 17370 [24] and experimentally validated by [52]. This included three layers, namely: sky, landscape, and ground; and a distant building and relatively near nature (e.g., lawn and trees).…”
