This study aimed to verify if the genetic divergence between papaya lines, obtained by means of molecular markers, is correlated with heterosis in the hybrids for characteristics related to production, fruit quality and disease resistance. Eight parents and 56 hybrids obtained from diallel crosses were evaluated in randomized blocks, with four replicates. The number of commercial fruits (NCF), the average fruit weight (AFW), the productivity (PROD), the fruit firmness (FIRM) and the total soluble solids (TSS) were evaluated, as well as the severity of black spot on leaves (BSS) and fruits (BSSFr), phoma spot (PSS) and powdery mildew on leaves (PMS). Correlations were estimated between genetic divergence, obtained based on Vivas, M.; Cardoso, D.L.; Ramos, H.C.C.; Santos, P.H.D.; Silveira, S.F.; Moraes, R.; Pereira, M.G. Genetic diversity between papaya lines and their correlation with heterosis in hybrids for disease resistance and morpho-agronomic traits. Summa Phytopathologica, v.44, n.1, p.110-115, 2018. SSR, and heterosis, estimated for each characteristic in four possibilities of crossings within the diallel: i) all crossings; ii) between parents of the 'Solo' group; iii) between parents of the 'Formosa' group; and iv) between parents of 'Solo' with 'Formosa' group and 'Formosa' with 'Solo' group. Results indicate the possibility of exploring heterosis both in crossings between groups and in crossings within groups. The low magnitude of the estimates of correlation between heterosis and morphological characteristics of the hybrids with genetic distance obtained by SSR in the parents indicates that the behavior of hybrids cannot be inferred based on the genetic divergence between parents.Keywords: Carica papaya, diallel, hybridization, plant breeding.Papaya (Carica papaya L.), one of the tropical plants with major importance for the national and world's fruit production, is cultivated in several Brazilian states. One of the bottlenecks of this crop is the lack of commercial varieties and hybrids that meet the requirements of the domestic and external market; thus, breeding programs with this attempt should be intensified. Breeding programs in papaya aim to obtain lineages and use them in hybridization programs with the focus on hybrid vigor or heterosis, a phenomenon that provides great productivity to hybrids from the crossing of highly divergent parents.In papaya, the possibility of exploring heterosis is already reported for morpho-agronomic characteristics (5, 17), physiological seed quality (19) and disease resistance (13,27,29,26). RESUMO Comparison of methods for classification of the coefficient of variation in papaya 1The objective of this work was to study the distribution of values of the coefficient of variation (CV) in the experiments of papaya crop (Carica papaya L.) by proposing ranges to guide researchers in their evaluation for different characters in the field. The data used in this study were obtained by bibliographical review in Brazilian journals, dissertations and thesis. This study considered the following characters: diameter of the stalk, insertion height of the first fruit, plant height, number of fruits per plant, fruit biomass, fruit length, equatorial diameter of the fruit, pulp thickness, fruit firmness, soluble solids and internal cavity diameter, from which, value ranges were obtained for the CV values for each character, based on the methodology proposed by Garcia, Costa and by the standard classification of Pimentel-Gomes. The results obtained in this study indicated that ranges of CV values were different among various characters, presenting a large variation, which justifies the necessity of using specific evaluation range for each character. In addition, the use of classification ranges obtained from methodology of Costa is recommended.Objetivou-se com esta pesquisa avaliar a distribuição dos valores de coeficiente de variação (CV) de experimentos com a cultura do mamoeiro (Carica papaya L.), propondo faixas que orientem os pesquisadores na avaliação de seus estudos para diferentes caracteres a campo. Os dados utilizados foram obtidos por revisão bibliográfica em periódicos, dissertações e teses nacionais. Foram considerados os caracteres diâmetro do caule, altura de inserção do primeiro fruto, altura da planta, número de frutos por planta, biomassa de frutos, comprimento de fruto, diâmetro equatorial de fruto, espessura de polpa, firmeza de fruto, sólidos solúveis e diâmetro da cavidade interna, dos quais foram obtidas faixas de valores de CV para cada caractere com base nas metodologias propostas por Garcia, por Costa, e na classificação padrão de Pimentel-Gomes. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que faixas de valores de CV diferiram entre as diversos caracteres apresentando ampla variação, justificando a necessidade de utilizar faixa de avaliação específica para cada caractere e, que se recomenda o uso das faixas de classificação obtidas a partir da metodologia de Costa. In papaya, information on the genetic control of traits related to the production and fruit quality are still scarce. In this sense, this study estimated genetic parameters and analyzed the inheritance of traits related to the production and quality of papaya fruit through complete diallel cross (F1's, reciprocal and parents). The number of commercial fruit, fruit weight, fruit yield, thickness of the pulp, firmness of the fruit and the soluble solids content were quantified. Number of commercial fruit, firmness of the fruit and the total soluble solids content had no significant effect in the three sufficiency tests of the additive-dominant model. The estimate of the average degree of dominance indicated partial dominance between alleles that act in the genetic control of the three traits. There was predominance of effects associated with additive components compared to the components associated with dominance effects for the three traits. For the number of marketable fruits and fruit firmness, predominant, but not exclusive recessive alleles, work to increase the mean value of this variable. In turn, for soluble solids content, predominant, but not exclusive dominant alleles, work to increase the mean value of this variable.
