Predictors of Data Sharing and Reuse Behavior in Academic Communities

Abstract: Research data sharing is one of the most interesting and challenging issues for researchers in the academic community. To investigate the effect of individual characteristics and organizational contexts on data sharing and reuse behaviors, this study employed a second analysis of the survey data. This study found that older researchers and those who allocate a lower percentage of their worktime to research are likely to share data and show a positive attitude toward data sharing. The study also found that acad… Show more

“…In addition, the type of data used by scientists and the ease with which this data can be reused is affecting data sharing and reuse practices: "reported use of models and remotesensed data had a large positive effect on reuse behavior [35]". Kim et al confirmed that types of "data sources used by academic researchers were found to have a significant relationship with data sharing and reuse behaviors [36]".…”

“…While most researchers seem to be satisfied with the initial steps of the data lifecycle (searching for, collecting and short-term storage of data), long-term data preservation is much more challenging and problematic, and most organizations do not provide sufficient training and support for data management [5,6]. Institutional involvement in training and data management assistance is crucial since the lack of skills and knowledge needed to prepare datasets for sharing is one primary reason why scientists choose not to share their data [31,36].…”

“…Such data growth has fundamentally changed the landscape of scientific research as well. The recent increase in the number of data types and the volume of research data produced by researchers, combined with the technological advances that allow us to organize and use/reuse data in new ways, has led to a need to preserve research data available and usable in the longer term and provide services related to that purpose (Kim, Schuler, & Pechenina, 2018; Tenopir et al, 2020). Many academic libraries have expanded their institutional repository services into the realm of research data to meet the needs of researchers who want to ensure their data can be accessed and cited in the long term (Lee & Stvillia, 2017).…”
