The current study investigated the predictive ability of language knowledge and reported strategy use on reading comprehension performance in English-speaking monolingual and bilingual students. One hundred fifty-five children in grade 4 through 6 (93 bilinguals and 62 monolinguals) were assessed on receptive vocabulary, word reading fluency, reading comprehension, and reading strategy use in English. An additional 38 adult bilinguals (i.e., English Language Learners) were assessed on the same measures. Although, the bilingual adult group and bilingual children had significantly lower English vocabulary knowledge relative to the monolingual children, the bilingual adults exhibited reading comprehension performance that was on par with the monolingual children; both groups outperformed the bilingual children. This discrepancy was accounted for by reported strategy use, wherein bilingual adults reported more inferencing, more connecting between sections of text and more reference to the text structure than the children. Reported strategy use also accounted for unique variance in reading comprehension performance above and beyond the contributions of English vocabulary knowledge and word reading fluency. Findings highlight the strategies that successful readers report and emphasize the value of promoting effective strategy selection in addition to language instruction in the development of reading comprehension skill.

Months before the May 2022 elections in the Philippines, many youth organizations published Filipino news articles about the presidential elections and the candidates running for different government positions. These articles inform the people about the elections and shape their opinions on the different candidates. This study used the mixed-method approach to measure the level of reading comprehension and experiences of students in reading Filipino news articles about the 2022 elections published by youth organizations and analyze the content of the said articles. A total of eighty (80) students from Philippine Science High School -Ilocos Region Campus were randomly selected to read a Filipino news article about the 2022 elections published by Explained PH and AsinBolo. The identified students were then asked to answer a questionnaire to measure their reading comprehension after reading the two articles; selected students were interviewed. The content analysis revealed that the article published by AsinBolo followed the inverted pyramid structure and used simple words in the headlines while the article published by Explained PH followed the narrative structure and often used direct and indirect quotations. Furthermore, the results indicate that the students were able to clearly understand the articles and that the reading comprehension between age and sex were not significantly different for both articles.However, there was a significant difference in the reading comprehension between different religions for the article published by AsinBolo. Finally, the thematic analysis revealed that there are six (6) factors that affected the reading comprehension of students in reading the Filipino news articles about the elections: word difficulty, familiarity with reading Filipino articles, organization of ideas, content length, current knowledge on politics, and the use of context clues.

Causal pattern test and cloze test: a study of L2 learners using distributed models of conceptual representation

The aim of this study was to investigate the cognitive processes involved in cloze passage and causal pattern tests. Two tests of causal patterns (one in Persian and one in English) and a cloze test were administered among a group of 30 participants. Correlations between participants’ scores were calculated. The results showed that there was a significant correlation between participants’ scores in each pair of the three tests. These results suggest that there might be similarity between causal pattern test and cloze test in terms of cognitive resources and cognitive operations that are employed during answering items of these tests. These similarities are described on the basis of distributed models of conceptual representation. Furthermore, it is proposed that there are some similarities between the strategies that can be employed by test takers to find the correct answers in these two types of test. The individuals who are better in simultaneous activation of various semantic properties, including semantic properties that are related to cause-effect relationships, are more successful in identifying causal patterns among various elements of a text.
