Preliminary characteristics of laminations in recent sediments from lakes Kamenduł and Perty in the Suwałki Landscape Park, northeastern Poland

Abstract: Varved lake sediments are well known archives used for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. They provide continuous, high-resolution and calendar-year chronologies of past environmental changes. From lakes Kamenduł and Perty, located in the Suwałki Landscape Park, short cores of laminated sediments were collected and investigated using microfacies analysis and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanning. Sediments of Lake Kamenduł form biogenic (calcite) varves with pale lamina containing precipitated calcite and dark la… Show more

“…High-resolution studies of the biogenic varve records aiming to reconstruct both, natural and human-related environmental conditions during the varves formation, relay on detailed characteristics of the laminae (Martin-Puertas et al 2012;Bonk et al 2016;Tylmann et al 2017). Such studies require an indepth understanding of processes leading to varves formation.…”

“…The dark sub-layer of calcite varves is often described as organic or diatom-organic (e.g. Lami et al 1994;Bonk et al 2015;Tylmann et al 2016) and may include a variety of mixed components including amorphous organic matter, diatom frustules, organic detritus and various amounts of minerogenic detritus (Table 1). Generally, this layer is interpreted as an autumn to winter layer but, in contrast to the many studies of calcite sub-layer formation, the detailed processes leading to the deposition of the dark sub-layer remain unravelled.…”

“…In typical dimictic lakes, the differences did not generally exceed 20%. Lakes showing signs of "spring meromixis" are objects of quiet lake sedimentation, which is indicated by the presence of annually laminated sediments [39]. The multi-basin Lake Jaczno turned out to be a special case.…”
