“…It may be noted that the final choice of a suitable filter for the RF driven negative ion source depends on experimental verifications of the concepts which may be carried out at ELISE test bed in IPP, 29 Garching or the SPIDER facility in Padova, Italy. 30 The electrostatic optimization has been carried out with SLACCAD and resulted in a beamlet RMS divergence of 2.2 mrad for an extraction voltage of 9.8 kV, while OPERA-3D calculated 2.08 mrad. When all the magnetic fields are included in the simulation, a beamlet divergence of 4.0 mrad is found.…”

“…Another important point of consideration is that the beam source, except for the extractor and accelerator system, needs to be identical for the DNB and H&CD beam lines. The optimal usable configuration of the ion source for ITER is expected to evolve after detailed experiments at RADI and ELISE in IPP [5], Garching, with sources half the size of ITER followed by experiments at the SPI-DER facility [6] in RFX Padova, Italy where the full sized ITER source shall be tested. Keeping in view the commonalities and the evolving design, the procurement of the ion source for the INTF has been phased so as to optimally utilize the configurational inputs which come out as a result of the experimental efforts at the above mentioned facilities.…”
