Preliminary fabrication and characterization of electron beam melted Ti–6Al–4V customized dental implant

Abstract: The current study was aimed to fabricate customized root form dental implant using additive manufacturing technique for the replacement of missing teeth. The root form dental implant was designed using Geomagic™ and Magics™, the designed implant was directly manufactured by layering technique using ARCAM A2™ electron beam melting system by employing medical grade Ti-6Al-4V alloy powder. Furthermore, the fabricated implant was characterized in terms of certain clinically important parameters such as surface mic… Show more

“…The images were captured at a 3× optical zoom. The data obtained by scanning the surface provided various parameters of the surface, and the integrated software, Vision64, translated the data into a 3‐D image . Several areal surface texture parameters, such surface roughness, the maximum surface peak height, the maximum valley or pit depth, the sum of the largest peak height value and largest pit or valley depth, the root mean square value of the sampling area, the measure of skewness or symmetry in roughness, and kurtosis of topography height distribution/the spread of height distribution were recorded.…”

“…Over the last two decades, dental implant has become an ideal treatment modality for edentulous patients 1) . Titanium and its alloys are the most widely used implant materials for their excellent mechanical strength, chemical inertness and high biocompatibility properties 2,3) . With the growing implantation demand of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients, an ongoing problem is that the higher failure rate of implant surgery in type 2 T2DM patients because its poor bone formation and the consequent osseointegration problems 4) .…”

“…Ti-6Al-4V additive manufacturing (AM) has played a key role in modern scientific exploration, from biocompatibility studies with mouse fibroblast cells [1] to dental implants [2]. As the role of AM grows larger, so does the need for understanding the effects of printing methods on materials.…”
