Preliminary report of an autochthonous chikungunya outbreak in France, July to September 2017

Abstract: In August 2017, an autochthonous chikungunya case was reported in south-east France. By mid-September, eight additional autochthonous cases were found in the index case’s neighbourhood, where the chikungunya virus vector Aedes albopictus was observed. Genomic characterisation identified an East-Central South African (ECSA) lineage strain, probably from the Central African region and carrying an adaptive mutation facilitating transmission by Ae. albopictus. The event confirms we need early case detection and re… Show more

“…Exotic MBDs transmitted by Ae. albopictus are also of concern, with the recent incursion of this species into temperate regions elsewhere that are climatically similar to parts of Canada (61,64,65,90) and the emergence of one small region in Canada where Ae. albopictus appears to have become established (20).…”

“…In this regard, most of the cases in Europe are imported, although in the last two decades there have been different epidemic outbreaks in Italy 12 and, recently, in France. 13 In Spain, only imported cases have been reported. 14 This mosquito (next to Aedes aegypti which, as will be detailed later, has been detected in a timely manner in Europe) can act as a vector of the dengue virus and with less effectiveness of the Zika virus.…”

“…A small CHIKV outbreak in the Caribbean at the end of 2013 marked its arrival in the Americas, from which over 1.5 million infections have been reported since 2014. Following its introduction in Italy (2007 and 2017) and France (2010 and 2017) on several occasions via infected travelers, CHIKV has caused limited locally transmitted outbreaks in Europe (6)(7)(8)(9). The geographical expansion of the Aedes albopictus vector and increased human travel pose the risk that CHIKV may become endemic in new territories.…”
