Many studies have shown that robots can provide medical help to patients, such as supporting physical movements, managing mood, or simulating cognitive function. However, robotic cognitive/language assessment, which is vital for mental health care, has not been fully explored and is limited to only a few types of assessment. The aim of this study is to present and evaluate a social robot equipped with a web-based language assessment for sentence comprehension test (SCT) with a dialogue system involving yes/no questions. A total of 50 participants took the test with 36 items conducted by a robot (robot-SCT), while a total of 55 participants took the same test but conducted by a human examiner (human-SCT). Comparative analyses were performed to evaluate the validity of the robot-SCT in terms of test scores and time-related measures. Usability was evaluated through the system usability score and interview feedback. With regard to the validity of the robot-SCT, the test scores indicated no significant differences between the robot-SCT and human-SCT. In addition, conditional differences in reaction time for the test items were observed, similar to the previous paper-and-pencil researches. The high system usability scores (i.e., mean = 78.5, SD = 11) demonstrated the high usability of the robot-SCT. This study demonstrates the validity and usability of robotic language assessment among normal adults. However, further evaluation is required for people with dementia or mild cognitive impairment.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of action naming tests when using a chatbot-based online platform. The performance of healthy young adults and healthy middle-aged adults on action naming tests was compared between online assessment platforms.Methods: A total of 81 participants were included in this study (40 young adults, 41 middle-aged adults). Participants were divided into two groups according to the online assessment platforms, 40 individuals (20 young adults, 20 middle-aged adults) receiving the action naming tests via Zoom and 41 individuals (20 young adults, 21 middle-aged adults) via chatbot.Results: The results indicated that there was no significant difference in action naming performance across online assessment platforms. In addition, young adults showed statistically higher performance compared to the middle-aged adults. There was a significant main effect of verb argument structure on action naming performance, with one- and two-place verbs having a higher correct response rate than three-place verbs.Conclusion: Although the younger group performed better than the middle-aged group, there were no significant differences in action naming performance between chatbot and Zoom groups, suggesting that chatbot-based action naming tests can be used interchangeably with the established online platforms. Accordingly, it is expected that we will be able to provide appropriate online language assessment services for each client in a future clinical setting.

Verb Recognition Abilities in Young and Older Adults as a Function of Linguistic Presentation Units

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine differences in verb recognition performance according to linguistic presentation units and question types between young and older adults. This study also examined the relationship between verb recognition performance and neuropsychological tests. Methods: A total of 39 participants (21 young adults and 18 old adults) participated in this study. All were administered verb recognition tasks in word and sentence conditions, and three types of recognition questions (presented verb, unpresented-related verb, unpresented-unrelated verb) were implemented. Results: First, the older adults showed significantly lower verb recognition performance than the young adults. Second, there was a significant interaction effect in linguistic presentation units and groups. Post-hoc analysis revealed that young adults’ recognition accuracy was higher in sentence condition compared to word condition, whereas old adults’ accuracy was higher in word condition than the sentence condition. Third, there was a significant main effect of question types. Fourth, in terms of accuracy of recognition questions, unpresented-unrelated verbs showed different tendency results compared to presented and unpresented-related verbs. Lastly, verb recognition performance was significantly correlated with neuropsychological tests. Conclusion: Results showed older adults’ decreased recognition performance due to cognitive decline and revealed the different patterns in recognition abilities according to linguistic presentation units and question types. These results suggest that cognitive load affected verb recognition in both conditions and that the verb recognition task could be implemented to examine older adults’ cognitive abilities.
