Prenatal sonographic diagnosis of acrania associated with amniotic bands

Abstract: We describe the prenatal sonographic findings in 2 cases of amniotic band sequence-related acrania. In the first case, sonography demonstrated acrania, asymmetric facial clefts, and digital fusion on the hands and feet. In the second case, sonography demonstrated acrania and amniotic bands adhering to the brain, face, and body. This report highlights the importance of a careful search for amniotic bands and a detailed survey of the fetus' face, digits, and body in the sonographic evaluation of fetal acrania.

“…While this mechanism of constriction and vascular interruption can account for the disruption-type birth defects of limb amputations and body-wall defects, such as the cases reported by Al-Qattan [2000] and Chen et al [2004], it cannot easily explain the cases in which developmental anomalies are seen [Hunter and Carpenter, 1986;Bronshetin and Zimmer, 1997]. Examples include such as imperforate anus [Carey et al, 1978], polydactyly [Graham et al, 1981], septo-optic dysplasia [Harrison et al, 2004], and CLP [Jabor and Cronin, 2000].…”
