Prenylated Anthraquinones and Other Constituents from the Seeds of Vismia laurentii

Abstract: Two new prenylated anthraquinones, laurenquinone A (1) and B (2) were isolated from the seeds of Vismia laurentii together with four known compounds; xanthone V 1 (3), physcion (4), 3-geranyloxyemodin anthrone (5) and friedelin (6). The structures of the new metabolites were determined with the help of spectroscopic data including extensive 2D-NMR spectroscopy. The known compounds were identified by comparison of their physical and spectroscopic data with those reported in the literature. Compounds 1, 4 and 5 … Show more

“…All the isolated compounds however showed antimicrobial activity with at least one microorganism. This finding is therefore not that surprising since some individual xanthones, anthraquinones and triterpenes have shown this type of biological activity (Barre et al, 1997;Ali et al, 2000;Fukai et al, 2005;Djoukeng et al, 2005;Nguemeving et al, 2006;Tala et al, 2007;Wabo et al, 2007).…”

“…1). Many triterpenoids, anthraquinones, xanthones have been reported from Vismia species (Araújo et al, 1990;Nagem and Faria De Jesus, 1990;Nagem and Alves, 1995;Nagem and De Olivera, 1997;Bilia et al, 2000;Dos Santos et al, 2000;Nguemeving et al, 2006;Tala et al, 2007;Wabo et al, 2007).…”

“…Vismia has been studied in different countries due to their excellent potential as medicinal plants (Lizcano et al, 2012;Tala et al, 2013;Tamokou et al, 2009;Traore et al, 2013;Wabo et al, 2007). In Brazilian folk medicine, Vismia cauliflora A.C.Sm [Hypericaceae (Clusiaceae)] has traditionally been used by Amerindians, mainly to treat dermatosis and inflammatory processes in the skin.…”
