Preoperative diagnostic values of fine-needle cytology and MRI in parotid gland tumors

Abstract: The aim of this retrospective study was to assess and compare the diagnostic value of fine-needle cytology and MRI for the prediction of malignancy in parotid tumors. During an 11-year period, 148 patients underwent preoperative fine-needle aspiration cytology in our institution. Eighty-seven patients underwent a preoperative MRI study, and 54 had both MRI and cytology. The study compares results of cytology and MRI with histological reports. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for detecting malignant le… Show more

“…Some mention has been made in previous studies on the potential importance of clinical data and imaging studies. Nevertheless, no concrete data or analyses were performed, except in articles by Paris et al [29] and Takashima et al [30] in which an estimated increase in sensitivity is suggested by addition of MRI, although with very small number of cases. In our study, the negative likelihood value increased significantly in cases with tumor size <4 cm, with well-defined tumor borders and when tumor masses were homogeneous-all these characteristics defined by clinic evaluation, CT, and US [30,31]-which allows better surgical-strategy design and objective, preoperative patient counseling.…”

“…Nine studies performed DW MRI [32, 33, 36, 37, 41, 44, 49, 50, 52], seven used DCE MRI [31, 32, 39, 42, 43, 49, 53], and 13 applied traditional MR [3335, 38, 40, 42, 4548, 51, 52, 54]. It should be noted that some studies used more than one MRI type [32, 33, 42, 49, 52].…”

“…Literatürde en sık görülen malign tümör tipi ise mukoepidermoid karsinom olarak bildirilmekle birlikte değişik çalışmalarda epidermoid karsinom ve adenokistik karsinom en sık görülen malignite olarak bildirilmiştir. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] İlginç olarak bizim çalışmamızda mukoepidermoid karsinom olgusuna rastlanmadı. Parotis tümörlerinin %15-32'si malign iken, submandibüler bez tümörlerinin %20-45'i, sublingual bez ve minör tükürük bezi tümörlerinin %70-90'ı maligndir.…”
