Preoperative Normovolemic Hemodilution in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Abstract: Normovolemic autotransfusion was used with 11 healthy females who were about to undergo multiple aesthetic plastic surgeries. After collecting a unit of blood immediately prior to surgery, a quick infusion of isotonic saline solution is made, at a 4-to-1 ratio, until reaching a hematocrit equal to or lower than 30%, thus inducing olighemia. The intended consequence is that blood lost during surgery be poor in red cell mass, which means reduced blood loss, leading to improved tissue oxygenation and decreased ri… Show more

“…9 Also, some surgeons believe that preoperative donation results in a lower hematocrit level, and that this, combined with acute preoperative hemodilution, results in a reduction in actual blood loss intraoperatively. 10,14 Numerous studies have been published assessing the role of autologous transfusion in breast reduction; most have shown no benefit to patients. 4,5 There have been no studies published to date in the English language literature assessing the role of autologous transfusion in transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous (TRAM) flap breast reconstruction.…”
