Preparation and Anti-Corrosive Properties of Cerium Oxide Conversion Coatings on Steel X52

Abstract: In this study, cerium-based conversion coating was deposited on steel X52 by dip immersion method. Cerium oxide/hydroxide is an environmentally friendly conversion coating. The effects of immersion times and immersion temperatures on corrosion properties of cerium conversion coating on steel X52 were studied. Its corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was investigated by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, and surface techniques. The coated samples showed a si… Show more

“…Afterward, due to the alkaline environment on the cathodic area, the precipitation of cerium oxide, CeO 2 is a consequence of a further interaction with the hydroxyl groups according to the reaction 2. The precipitation of a stable and compact CeO 2 oxide significantly delays the activation and evolution corrosion phenomena, providing reliable coverage on the defective areas, thus improving the passivating action [117].…”

“…According to multiple published articles, most of the nanoparticles added to the coating bath are incorporated with the deposited metal matrix on the surface of the substrate. As a result, different properties of the deposited layer become noticeable because of the added nanoparticles' physicochemical and mechanical properties [12] [13] [14].…”

“…The Ce based coatings are seen to alter the cathodic activity by forming some insoluble hydroxides. Although the cerium conversion coatings are less improvised than the Cr based but in recent context they are conveyed as one of the most promising environmentally friendly surface treatments for a wide range of metals [15] . The incorporation of rare earth inhibitors into the filler (mesoporous silicates) of epoxy‐based systems showed an improvement by reserving and controlling the release of the inhibitors.…”
