Preparation and Characterization of Facilitated Transport Membranes Composed of Chitosan-Styrene and Chitosan-Acrylonitrile Copolymers Modified by Methylimidazolium Based Ionic Liquids for CO2 Separation from CH4 and N2

Abstract: CO2 separation was found to be facilitated by transport membranes based on novel chitosan (CS)–poly(styrene) (PS) and chitosan (CS)–poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) copolymer matrices doped with methylimidazolium based ionic liquids: [bmim][BF4], [bmim][PF6], and [bmim][Tf2N] (IL). CS plays the role of biodegradable film former and selectivity promoter. Copolymers were prepared implementing the latest achievements in radical copolymerization with chosen monomers, which enabled the achievement of outstanding mechanica… Show more

“…For instance, on the one hand, the characterization of SILMs by very different techniques remains as a very hot topic, since these techniques can provide information for a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the selective transport of SILMs. This is basic to optimize their applicability and implementation in real-scale industrial processes [ 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 ]. On the other hand, the analysis of the stability of the SILMs has been object of intensive research efforts, since the underlying liquid phase loss mechanism of SILMs must be taken into consideration in order to minimize it and extend the effective lifetime of SILMs [ 56 , 57 , 58 , 59 , 60 ].…”

“…Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are polymeric membranes filled with (nano)particles uniformly distributed in the polymer matrix to increase the membrane performance. The possibility of using organic or inorganic composite materials has been examined by researchers to improve the properties of the MMMs [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ].…”

“…To obtain quaternized derivatives, we used chitosan (CTZ) (Bioprogress, Russia) prepared from chitin with a molecular weight of 8.7 × 10 4 -2.5 × 10 5 and a deacetylation degree of 80% without additional purification and potato starch (Verkhovicheskii Krakhmalnii Zavod, Russia) [22,25,26] with a molecular weight of 1.5 × 10 5 . Exhaustive alkylation (quaternization) of chitosan was carried out in aqueous solutions of CH 3 COOH (NaOH) containing glycidyltrimethylam-monium chloride (GTMAC) in an inert atmosphere at 85°C for 8 hours.…”

“…However, in the case of active transfer, for example, for perfluorinated polymer membranes [20] or for membranes based on ionic liquids [21], the permeability of active penetrants, such as ammonia and carbon dioxide, increased due to the action of the facilitated transfer mechanism, namely, facilitated diffusion [22].…”
