Preparation and characterization of imidazolyl ionic liquid‐based shear thickening dispersion system

Abstract: Shear thickening liquid (STF) is a new nonNewtonian fluid widely used in industrial production. In this paper, a novel shear thickening and dispersing system, namely poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA)/1-butyl-3-methylimidazole hexa-fluorophosphate ([BMIM]PF 6), was prepared using ultrasonic with PMMA as the dispersing phase and [BMIM]PF 6 as the dispersing medium. The stability, thixotropic, reversibility, rheology, and viscoelasticity of the dispersion system was studied, respectively. The dispersed system has g… Show more

“…However, there are also some cases where STFs are obtained by sonochemical methods [ 32 ]. Silica is a primary choice as a solid phase for STF production [ 16 , 33 , 34 ], but other raw materials such as corn starch [ 35 ], calcium carbonate [ 36 ], titanium dioxide [ 37 ], polymethyl methacrylate [ 38 ], polystyrene [ 39 ], or ethyl polystyrene acrylate [ 40 ] are also used for this purpose. The continuous phase of an STF is usually ethylene glycol [ 41 , 42 ], poly(ethylene glycol) [ 32 , 43 , 44 ], propylene glycol [ 41 ], or poly(propylene glycol) [ 7 , 45 , 46 , 47 ].…”

“…41,51,52 Under shear, the decrease 53,54 or increase 55,56 in viscosity originates from the orientation of aggregates or entanglement of mesostructures, respectively. 57,58 For some cases, with the rise in temperature of the medium, the bulk viscosity of ILs and their mixtures tend to decrease. 59,60 Sarman et al have probed the rheology of phosphonium ILs using molecular dynamics simulations.…”
