Preparation and Characterization of Nitinol Bone Staples for Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery

Abstract: The aim of this work was to form NiTi and TiNiCo body temperature activated and superelastic staples for clinical joining of mandible and face bone fractures. The alloys were obtained by VIM technique. Hot and cold processing was applied to obtain wires of required diameters. The martensitic transformation was studied by DSC, XRD, and TEM. The shape memory effects were measured by a bend and free recovery ASTM F2082-06 test. The superelasticity was recorded in the tension stress-strain and by the three-point b… Show more

“…1 In addition to these properties SMA exhibits SME and PE, high specific strength, greater ductility, and elastic modulus. 2,3 To further expand their use in several other specific applications, additional alloying elements are to be used. Adding third element in NiTi alloys by replacing Ti or Ni has an extensive effect on their phase transformation behavior and properties of the material.…”

“… 2 Nitinol staples are an increasingly utilized product in orthopaedic procedures because the pseudoelastic properties allow for sustained compression. 10 , 13 , 17 For example, nitinol staples have been shown to be superior to traditional fixation methods in scaphoid fractures and have great efficacy in midfoot and hindfoot arthrodesis. 4 , 12 , 14 Furthermore, these nitinol staples are low profile and can be seated flush to the cortical surface, thereby limiting the risk of contact and irritation to the adjacent peroneal nerve.…”

“…Bu mekanizma eklem-içi, çene ve yüz kırıkları gibi birçok kırıkta başarı ile uygulanabilmiştir. Diğer taraftan bu yöntemin tıbbi operasyon süresini azaltarak klinik açıdan avantaj sağladığı bildirilmiştir [31][32][33].…”
