Preparation and characterization of temperature‐responsive chromatographic column containing poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) and poly([2‐(methacryloyloxy)‐ ethyl]trimetylammonium chloride)

Abstract: This article described the preparation of temperature-responsive chromatographic column containing poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and poly quaternary ammonium salt. Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) and poly ([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimetylammonium chloride) were synthesized and grafted to amino modified silica gel. The temperature responsive polymer grafted silica gel was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermoweight loss, and elemental analysis. The temperature responsive chromatograph… Show more

“…Alongside columns based on homo-PNIPAAm, several co-polymers including NIPAAm have been tested as well, as they lead to a modification of the LCST and induce slightly different retention properties. [35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42] Other polymers that have successfully been used in TR columns include polyoxazoline (LCST controllable) and polyvinylcaprolactam (LCST 35ºC). 43,44 The possibility of applying TRLC in heart-cutting 2D-LC (LC-LC) has recently been illustrated by Kanazawa et al, where a TR column was used as a pretreatment column.…”

“…Four steroids were used to evaluate the temperature sensitivity and the separation performance of the silica materials at 10, 30, and 50 °C [56,57]. As shown in Figure 4, the retention time of the steroids and the number of peaks increased with increasing temperature.…”

“…The separation effect of grafted stationary phase was significantly enhanced and retention time was extended with the increase in temperature . The separation of compounds on the thermally responsive column could be performed with an aqueous mobile phase without any organic solvent , which will be beneficial for reducing the environmental pollution.…”
