Unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) is a thermoset-type polymer, and it is widely used in the fiber-reinforced plastic industry. This can be attributed to its low cost, ease of processing and combination with reinforcements, rapid cure, excellent dimensional stability, and a wide variety of grades available. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of grafted copolymers on the properties of UPR. Testing included viscosity, gel time, curing temperature, hardness, tensile strength, and compressive strength.The grafted copolymers were based on polypropylene glycol (PPG) grafted with styrene (St) at different St ratios (65/15, 65/25, 65/35). The grafted copolymers were prepared by free-radical polymerization in the presence of potassium persulphate as an initiator. The results showed that significant improvement in the physical and mechanical properties of UPR due to the modification of UPR by the prepared grafted copolymer. It was found that the physical and mechanical properties of UPR enhanced with increasing the ratio of St in the grafted copolymer and the concentration of grafted copolymers. This is attributed to the high rigidity of the grafted copolymer containing the highest styrene content.

New various monomers with di amine functional groups have been synthesized, containing di azomethine or di seven-membered heterocyclic rings in the backbone. A condensation reaction of benzidine with 4-amino benzaldehyde with some drops of glacial acetic acid in ethanol absolute prepared bi-functional amino groups monomer with azomethine core P1(4-[(1E)-[4[4-(E)-(4-aminophenyl)methylidene]amino]phenyl}phenylimino methyl aniline). The next step was the Cycloaddition reaction of P1 with succinic, malic, and phthalic anhydrides used to obtain aromatic heterocyclic monomers with oxazepane and oxazepine rings containing lactone and lactam groups. All the synthesized monomers were characterized spectrally with many techniques (FT.IR,1 H1.NMR, C13-NMR) that were used to investigate the functional groups in the structure of monomers. Monitoring the progress and completion of the reaction was performed using thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Physical characterizations, including detecting the melting point, purity, colour, retardation factor, molecular formula, and molecular weight, the polarized optical microscope (POM) used for Image-based microscopic interpretation of prepared compounds. All the prepared monomers are considered effective antioxidant agents as they give free radicals scavenging over 60%, reaching 80 %; this activity makes them useful in large numbers of industries as they can scavenge the free radicals that the industrial product may be exposed, which increases its shelf life and enhance its effectiveness.

The effects of iron filings on the tensile and flexural properties of unsaturated polyester reinforced by iron filings have been studied. Particulate polyester composite reinforced by iron filings of different wt. % were synthesised and characterised. The mass percentage of the iron filings, varied from 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 to 30 % were added to unsaturated polyester resin with 2 grams of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide catalyst and 0.5 grams of cobalt naphthalene accelerator to synthesise the composites. Tensile and flexural tests were carried out on the samples. The metallographic study was carried out using an optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. Results showed that tensile properties, including energy absorbed at fracture, percentage elongation, and tensile strength of the composite improved with increasing wt. % of filing particles up to 15 wt. %. This trend was also observed in the flexural strength results. The sample with 15 wt. % iron filings was observed to have the optimum reinforcement effect with a tensile strength of 34.91 MPa, a flexural strength of 111.06 MPa, and a modulus of elasticity of 1581.29 MPa.
