Preparation and Optical Properties of Transparent Eu3+:Y3Al5(1−x)Sc5xO12 Ceramics

Abstract: Using a novel combustion method, Eu-doped Eu:yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) and Eu:YSAG powders, and transparent Eu:YSAG ceramics were fabricated. The optical properties of these transparent ceramics have been measured, and a reduced peak splitting of Eu 31 for 5 D 0 -7 F 1 and 5 D 0 -7 F 2 was observed when 10 at.% Al 31 was substituted by Sc 31 . The enhanced symmetry of the Eu sites in YAG lattice, which resulted from the expanded YSAG lattice by Sc 31 doping, is the main reason for the reduced peak splittin… Show more

“…Lower-temperature PL spectra (77 K) of the Eu:HA-F and Cit/Eu:HA-F NPs are shown in Figures S11 and S12 (Supporting Information). In the Cit/Eu:HA-F NPs, the 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 transition showed obvious splitting at 550 °C, suggesting that Eu 3+ diffused to Ca(II) sites with lower symmetry, , which further supported the conclusion that the Cit molecules coordinated on HA surfaces promoted the diffusion of Eu 3+ ions into the HA structures.…”

“…Therefore, extended doping is one of the targets of new transparent YAG ceramics. 32 The investigations are of outstanding technological importance since these ceramics are the first example where extremely high optical parameters (least scattering and absorptions losses associated with an extreme homogeneity over the macroscopic volume) were achieved for thicknesses in the centimetre range.…”

“…[6][7][8][9] However, the handling and contamination control of nanometric powders are often difficult and the reliability of the process is poor. 6,10 Micrometric powders, on the other hand, if properly shaped may equally promote homogeneous particle coordination and at the same time result in formation of fine grained microstructures.…”
