Preparation and properties of organo-montmorillonite/cis-1,4-polybutadiene rubber nanocomposites by solution intercalation

Abstract: Organo-montmorillonite (OMMT)/cis-1,4-polybutadiene rubber (BR) nanocomposites were prepared by solution intercalation. The microstructure of these composites was characterized by TEM and XRD. The effect of OMMT on mechanical properties, thermal stability and swelling behavior of the nanocomposites was investigated. TEM and XRD confirmed the intercalated structure of OMMT/BR nanocomposites. When the OMMT content was b12 mass%, the nanocomposites showed excellent tensile properties, which was attributed to the … Show more

“…5 and 10 phr of OC led, respectively, to about 10% and 15% reduction of the oxygen permeability, and, at 15% OC, to a 30% reduction of toluene absorption at 30 o C [94]. In BR as the matrix, 5 phr OC (Mt/dimethyl ditallow-ammonium) dispersed from solution blending, led to a reduction of about 80% of water vapour permeability, whereas 10 phr OC gave about 20% reduction of toluene uptake at equilibrium [95]. In NBR as the matrix, 1 phr of OC (Mt/dimethyl ditallow-ammonium) dispersed from solution blending brought to about 80% decrease of water vapour permeability [96].…”

“…In order to achieve the desired dispersion of nanofillers, various methods for obtaining elastomeric nanocomposites, similar to those applied for thermoplastics-based nanocomposites, have been used, such as solution mixing [15][16][17], latex compounding [18][19][20] and melt mixing [21][22][23][24]. Among these, melt mixing is the most widely used due to its simplicity and potential industrial applicability.…”
