Preparation and Swelling Inhibition of Polyammonium

Abstract: A new anti-swelling agent was synthesized by polymerizing epichlorohydrin and dimethyl amine polymer. The swelling inhibition properties were investigated over clay and shale. It was found that the clay inhibition of swelling properties was greatly enhanced compared with common inorganic salts. However, to shale, the swelling properties did not inhibited efficiently by using prepared polymers. Furthermore, the influence of cross linking of polyammonium to the swelling ability of prepared polymer has been also … Show more

“…The rheological properties, filtration properties and lubrication properties of drilling fluid with inhibitor, tackifier, filtrating agent or lubricant such as AV (apparent viscosity), PV (plastic viscosity), YP (yield point), FL (API filtration) and TG (friction coefficient), were evaluated using a viscometer (ZNN-D6S, Hetongda Co. Ltd, Qingdao), medium-pressure filtration instrument (GJSS-B12K, Haitongda Co. Ltd, Qingdao) and viscosity coefficientin strument (Qingdao Hetongda Co. Ltd, Qingdao) according to the formulas in Chinese National Standard GB/T 16783.1-2006, followed by the thermogravimetry, mud ball experiment and SEM were carried out after the formula of solid-state drilling fluid was determined. “…Recently, polyammonium has been developed as a kind of excellent clay expansion inhibitor, but these polymers adsorb on the surface of rock, block the formation, and then reduce the permeability of reservoir. Besides, the high toxicity of cationic polymers limits their use either (Deng et al., 2012; Ni et al., 2016; Zhong et al., 2013). Some small molecular ammonium salts, as inhibitors for shale hydration, can avoid such defect above and exhibit ideal inhibitions without any poisonous or hazardous materials.…”
