Preparation and thermal properties of mesoporous silica/phenolic resin nanocomposites via in situ polymerization

Abstract: In order to enhance the adhesion between inorganic particles and polymer matrix, in this paper, the mesoporous silica SBA-15 material was synthesized by the sol-gel method. The surface of SBA-15 was modified using γ-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GOTMS) as a coupling agent, and then mesoporous silica/phenolic resin (SBA-15/PF) nanocomposites were prepared via in situ polymerization. The structural parameters and physical properties of SBA-15, SBA-15-GOTMS (SBA-15 surface treated using GOTMS as couplin… Show more

“…The large variety of polymer systems used in nanocomposites preparation with mesoporous silica can be divided into four categories. (i) vinyl polymers, for example, methyl methacrylate, 1316 other acrylates, 17 polystyrene 1820 , and poly vinyl acetate (PVAc); 21 (ii) condensation (step) polymers like epoxy polymer resins (EPR), 2226 nylon 6 (N6), 27 N66, 28 polyethylene oxide (PEO), 29,30 polybutadiene, 31 butadiene copolymers, 32,33 natural rubber, 34 silicone rubber, 35 phenolic resins, 36 polyimides, 37 and polysulfone; 38 (iii) polyolefins including polypropylene (PP) 3943 and polyethylene (PE); 44,45 and (v) specialty polymers such as polypyrrole (PPY) 46 and polyaromatics such as polyaniline (PANI). 47…”

“…More recently, SBA-15 was used as a promising inorganic support due to its structural properties and various technological applications such as molecular sieves, sensors, catalysts, nanoelectronics, drug delivery and separation. [48][49][50][51][52][53][54] Recent studies have demonstrated that several factors can control the condensation rates of SBA-15 which contains amounts of inorganic salts, shape of surfactant micelles, stirring rate and condensation rate of silica. [55] On the other hand, metal-organic complexes, involving rare earth elements such as lanthanide ions, are often used in catalysis field because they have the oxophilic nature and can easily build a framework structure.…”

“…[7][8][9] Recently, numerous methods have been developed for the controlled synthesis of various polymers in the mesoporous silicas, such as SBA-15, MCM-41, MCM-48, which own high surface area, strict porous structures, and easily surface functionalization. [10][11][12] The most synthetic strategies for incorporating polymer guest into the mesoporous silica material host have been dependent on the approach of adsorption or in situ polymerization. For example, polyphenylenevinylene derivative polymer has been encapsulated into the mesoporous SBA-15 platelets by direct impregnation, 13 and polyphenylenevinylene can also be included in the mesoporous metal oxides via in situ polymerization.…”
