Preparation of a concentric layered structure of an electrospun nanofiber column for solid-phase extraction of mass viscous crude extracts

Abstract: The packed nanofiber solid-phase extraction of crude extracts of a mass viscous sample is challenging because the interference and recalcitrant particulates in the sample may attach to the nanofiber and block the column, which leads to insufficient sample extraction. A novel concentric layered nanofiber solid-phase extraction (SPE) column using polystyrene-based electrospun nanofiber as the stationary phase has been employed for the pretreatment of mass viscous crude extracts. The layered column was fabricated… Show more

“…28 Their high surface-to-volume ratio results in a relatively high capacity of adsorption that allows for reducing the amount of adsorbent as well as a higher enrichment factor compared with silica-based materials. 29,30 Solid-phase extraction using nanofibrous materials has been performed in different formats, such as fiber-packed pipette tips [31][32][33][34] or syringes, 35,36 membrane disks (sometimes called "mat"), [37][38][39][40][41][42] column experiments, 43 and batch experiments, including headspace extraction. [44][45][46] Another advantage of nanofibrous materials is the relatively low pressure drop that occurs when the sample solution passes through the medium.…”

“…Recent developments of traditional generic solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbents have provided new high-performing varieties, like mixed-mode polymeric sorbents 1,2 and nanostructured materials. 3,4 While many of these SPE materials are excellent when applied for removal of contaminants, the reduction of sample complexity is often lacking, especially in the case of low abundant biomarker analytes in complex matrixes, such as blood, serum, 5 plasma, 6 or urine. 7,8 Thus, there is a need for new SPE sample preparation materials with high selectivity and specificity toward targeted analytes, preferably with a high specific surface area and enhanced chemical/physical stability.…”
