Preparation of Hybrid Organic/Inorganic Luminescent Thin Solid Films with Highly Concentrated Laser-dye Cations

Abstract: To develop solid materials with high luminescence, the preparation of laser-dye rhodamine 6G (R6G)/clay hybrid thin solid films with surfactant molecules as aggregation suppressors was investigated. Dodecyltrimethylammonium cations were found to be very effective for inhibiting dye aggregation in the clay interlayer space. Consequently, this material showed light emission from the R6G monomer.

“…Indeed, we could not prepare the films of (R3B, Ox4)/Sum systems which would exhibit luminescent properties (not shown). This problem was also encountered in other studies (see discussion above), but, recently, has been prevented by premodification of the clay mineral surface with long-chain alkylammonium cations [13]. In this study, we prepared the oriented films of Sum which had been premodified with DTMA surfactant cations.…”

“…The positive band at the lowest wavelengths at about 560 nm may also include light absorption by the R3B monomers. The surfactant cations probably played an important role in hydrophobization of the clay mineral surface and "solubilization" of the dye cations at the solid clay mineral surface and dye solution interface to prevent their aggregation [13].…”

“…H ‐aggregates can be removed using suitable reaction conditions of the preparation of hybrid systems and also by using an appropriate chemical premodifier of the silicate precursors. Sasai et al managed to prepare highly luminescent films of clay minerals with rhodamine 6G when the molecular aggregation of the dye was suppressed due to the premodification of the inorganic host with appropriate amounts of long‐chain alkylammonium ions.…”

“…However, dye adsorption on clay mineral particles is frequently accompanied by molecular aggregation, which leads to a substantial reduction in the dye photoactivity [4,9,15] and to the quenching of luminescence [10]. Systems that are more complex and that include alkylammonium cations as a third component were very efficient in preventing the molecular aggregation of adsorbed dye cations [16,17]. Systems based on OCs with embedded dye molecules would be very attractive for further applications, such as in polymer nanocomposites, as materials for environmental use, or as nanoparticles for antimicrobial treatment.…”
