Preparation of Polymer/Drug Nano‐ and Micro‐Particles by Electrospraying

Abstract: The surface energy control capability of electrohydrodynamic force provides electrospraying with various potential advantages such as simple particle size control, mono-dispersity, high recovery, and mild processing conditions. Herein, particle fabrication of biodegradable polymers using electrospraying was developed. The major processing parameters such as the conductivity of spraying liquids, flow rate, etc., were examined to obtain the successful apparatus configuration of electrospraying. The choice of a c… Show more

“…The ES of a 0.5 wt% solution of PCL into water without stirring led to formation of a thin film on the water surface, while a 0.5 wt% of PMMA resulted in particles of 2 μm size. On the other hand, 1 wt% triphenyl phosphate buffer was an efficient collection medium for ES of chitosan nanoparticles, while it was not effective for PCL (Park et al, 2007). These results indicate that the interactions between the particle and collection media are critical for obtaining well-dispersed particles.…”

“…In more detail, the difference in surface tension of the collecting solutions affected the degree of particle compression, which consequently, led toward a different deformation of particles. 98 The influence of collection and consolidation media on the particle formation and properties was also confirmed in a study by Park et al 99 Other processing parameters such as temperature and relative humidity are worth mentioning as they play an important role in the solidification process of electrosprayed droplets as well as for polymer diffusion inside the droplets, which in turn will determine the particle quality, especially the particle morphology. Besides, higher temperature not only favors faster evaporation but also increases molecular mobility and solution conductivity as well as decreases solution viscosity which all contribute to a possible decrease in particle size.…”

“…Usually, the setup for collecting the particles produced by electrospraying is a hard surface located on the counter electrode. Nevertheless, different authors have published an alternative “soft” collecting approach where the droplets or particles are caught in liquid medium [ 222 , 223 , 224 , 225 ]. One of the benefits of this collecting method is the prevention of possible particle aggregation or film formation on the hard collector [ 223 ].…”
