Preparation of Thermoresponsive Polymer Nanogels of Oligo(Ethylene Glycol) Diacrylate-Methacrylic Acid and Their Property Characterization

Abstract: Stimuli-responsive polymers have received growing attention in recent years owing to their wide applications in diverse fields. A novel stimuli-responsive polymer, based on oligo(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (OEGDA) and methacrylic acid (MAA), P(OEGDA-MAA), is prepared by precipitation polymerization and is shown to have a LCST-type VPTT (volume phase transition temperature) at 33 °C in water and a UCST-type VPTT at 43 °C in ethanol, all at concentration of 1 mg/mL. Both VPTTs are strongly concentration and pH … Show more

“…Some polymers with the LCST/UCST switching behaviors by changing solvents, like PNIPAM, were also reported [10][11][12]. Besides, the addition of salt induced the switching of the LCST/UCST behaviors of these LCST/UCST diblock polymers [5,6,[13][14][15]. Due to the fact that the control of these phase transition temperatures is important for the application of thermosensitive polymers, various kinds of polymers have been studied [5][6][7].…”

“…10 The LCST/UCST behaviors of poly(ethylene glycol diacrylate [OEGDA]-b-methacrylic acid [MAA]) were also switched by the content of alcohol in aqueous solution. 11 Interestingly, the LCST-type thermosensitive behaviors of PNIPAM in water were changed into the UCST-type in a binary aqueous solution containing alcohol and DMSO. 12 There are several reports on polymers with the LCST/UCST switching behaviors by changing solvents, like PNIPAM.…”

“…Such phenomenon was also attributed to the LCST-type thermoresponsive behavior of PNVCL that results in a phase transition from hydrated nanogels at 25°C to dehydrated nanogels starting at 35°C. Nanogels began to shrink at 35°C and caused the interaction between the nanogels more pronounced than their interaction with water molecules, which leads to the aggregation of the nanogels [ 28 ]. Thus, a larger particle size was observed above 35°C.…”
