[1] Heute kennen wir davon drei Modifikationen (a-, bund g-P 4 ), [3] die tetraedrische P 4 -Einheiten enthalten (wie die Gasphase) und durch die unterschiedliche Anordnung der Tetraeder charakterisiert sind. Der bisher als stabil erachtete orthorhombische schwarze Phosphor (o-P) [4] entsteht unter Druck. Ein direkter Zugang über einen Mineralisator gelang erst vor wenigen Jahren.[5] In o-P sind Schichten von sechsgliedrigen Ringen anders verknüpft als in der trigonalen Hochdruckform (h-P) [6] mit der Struktur des grauen Arsens. Bei noch hçherem Druck bildet sich daraus die kubisch primitive, 3-dimensional (3D) kovalent verknüpfte Struktur des a-Po-Typs (c-P). Beim Erhitzen des weißen Phosphors über 200 8C entstehen stufenweise erst amorphe und dann kristalline Formen des roten Phosphors. [1] Ihnen liegen (wie nachfolgend gezeigt) tubuläre Baueinheiten aus fünf-und sechsgliedrigen Ringen zugrunde. In Unkenntnis ihrer Strukturen wurden die roten Formen zunächst durchnummeriert (I-V).[7] Als einzige davon war lange Zeit die Struktur V, violetter Hittorfscher Phosphor (monoklin, m-P), durch Arbeiten von Thurn und Krebs bekannt, der sich in Plättchen aus Blei kristallisieren ließ. [8] Vor wenigen Jahren gelang Pfitzner et al. [9] und Ruck et al.[10] die Charakterisierung tubulärer P-Allotrope. Roter, faserfçrmiger Phosphor (triklin, t-P) wurde neben m-P kristallin bei 570-590 8C aus amorphem, rotem Phosphor erhalten. Das Beugungsbild des faserfçrmigen Phosphors entspricht der kristallinen Form IV. Die Strukturlçsung bestä-tigte die Vermutung, dass darin dieselben Rçhren paarweise parallel, statt wie in m-P orthogonal zu Schichten, verknüpft sind. Selected allotropes of phosphorus are investigated by different levels of density functional theory (DFT) calculations to evaluate the relative stability orders with a special focus on the role of van der Waals interactions. Phosphorus is an excellent reference system with a large number of allotropes. Starting from low-dimensional molecular (0D, white P) and polymer structures (1D, P nanorods) to layered (2D, black P) and tubular structures (2D and 3D, crystalline forms of red P), covalent structure motifs are interconnected by van der Waals interactions. They are a key factor for the correct energetic description of all P allotropes. A comparative study is carried out within the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), with and without implementation of a dispersion correction by Grimme (GGA-D2). Our intention is to achieve a reasonable agreement of our calculations with experimental data, the plausibility of energy values, and the treatment of long-range interactions. The effect of van der Waals interactions is exemplified for the interlayer distances of black phosphorous and its electronic structure.

“…The crystal structure of Cu,P,I, is dominated by one-dimensional, infinite chains of covalently bonded phosphorus atoms which are surrounded by Cu' and r ions, as shown in Figure 1. In the unit cell there are 32 Cu' ions distributed over 60 atomic positions with site occupancies ranging from 15 to 97 f 1% (3). Given that the crystal structure shows one-dimensional channels and a lot of vacancies in the copper sub-lattice, it would appear reasonable that Cu2P,I, should exhibit enhanced Cu' ion mobility.…”
