Preparedness for family caregiving prior to allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

Abstract: Objective Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is a curative treatment associated with high morbidity and mortality. It is often necessary for family caregivers to become highly involved in the care, especially when patients return home after a long period of inpatient care. Family caregivers’ preparedness for the tasks and demands of the caregiving role prior to allo-HSCT might help them during this distressing time. “…Many participants described that they realised during the first conversation that the patient's health could deteriorate during and after the HSCT, which increased their preparedness. This finding is very positive, as our earlier study shows that preparedness does not decrease over time among FC in the HSCT context [20]. The insight gained by FC in the present study was mainly related to two of the domains in the CSNAT tool, namely caring for the patient during the night and giving practical help to the patient at home.…”

“…Socio‐demographic factors, such as age, gender, relationship to the person and whether the caregiver is cohabiting with the patient, and perceived social support influence caregiver preparedness (Karabulutlu et al, 2021; Liu et al, 2020; Winterling et al, 2021). If the demographic characteristics of caregivers influence their preparedness, they can be addressed.…”

“…Further, many studies indicate that caregiving preparedness is associated with other positive outcomes. For example, although we did not measure in our study, previous study indicates that a higher preparedness associates with higher competence and quality of life (Winterling, Kisch, Alvariza, Årestedt, & Bergkvist, 2021).…”
