Preparing for International Leadership in Higher Education

Abstract

Innovation in technology, migration, significant economic growth, and shifts in geo-politics have propelled the rate and impact of globalization. Institutions of higher education worldwide have had to respond and adapt to new dynamics created by these conditions. Where institutions might have thought of their brand as confined to a town or state, globalization has pushed institutions to think beyond borders and engage with the world at large in order to foster the development of global learners and citizens. The emergence of international leadership in higher education through initiatives such as education abroad, satellite campuses, faculty and staff exchanges, and MOUs between institutions is evidence that higher education is a global enterprise for which African American higher education leaders must be prepared. This chapter presents self-mentorship and the emotionally intelligent leadership framework to develop knowledge, skills, and awareness for effective and successful international leadership in higher education.
