Objectives: This study was designed to assess Health Care Professionals' knowledge about occupational therapy in Makkah-Saudi Arabia. Methods: Convenience sampling was used and 320 of Health Care Professionals, including physicians, nurses, physical therapists and social workers, were recruited from three different hospitals in Makkah to fill in a developed questionnaire. Descriptive analysis was used for participant's demographic data presentation. The mean percent scores were compared among four groups of professionals by using One-way ANOVA test with post hoc Tucky's Test. The comparison was done by using Chi-square test. Results: The study found that Health Care Professionals had poor knowledge about occupational therapy (49.35%, SD=7.36). It also exhibited that the highest percentage of knowledge about occupational therapy within the four groups was in physicians (51.97%) followed by physical therapists (50.81%, n=24) and nurses (48.32, n= 165), whereas social workers had the lowest percentage of knowledge (47.17%, n= 30). Conclusion: Health care professionals in Makkah lack adequate knowledge about occupational therapy, its goals and treatment methods. This dearth of knowledge among Health Care Professional requires to be addressed in order to improve the provision of service for patients in need of occupational therapy to subsequently improve their quality of life.

The purpose of this study was to determine if Jordanian health professionals have adequate understanding of occupational therapy. A convenience sample of 556 Jordanian physicians, nurses, and physical therapists from two hospitals completed a developed questionnaire about occupational therapy including general knowledge, areas of practice, therapy goals, treatment strategies, and perceptions. Results showed that physical therapists were more informed about occupational therapy than physicians and nurses, although the level of knowledge of occupational therapy was limited for all three groups. The implications of the results are discussed in addition to exploring ideas about improving the awareness of the profession.

Abstract:The study investigated the extent of information the nurses have about Occupational Therapy (OT) and its place within a health Multidisciplinary Team (MDT). It took place in the paediatric ward of the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Gauteng Department of Health. It was stimulated by the adverse attitude of the nurses to the OT staff and/or students from Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) for prescribed OT activities in that ward. The purpose of the study was to demonstrate that if nurses in a MDT setting did not understand OT purpose, then this may cause lack of their appreciation of OT activities and of occupational therapists. Forty-three nurses participated in the study. Most of them did not know much about OT and seemed to have different impressions about the OT profession. The study recommended that the nurses should be informed about other practitioners in the MDT of their workplace, how each one works and the scope of the nurses' work.
