Presence of pollinator‐friendly habitat on pollinator communities in managed turfgrass systems

Abstract: Insect pollinator community dynamics in established turfgrass systems is a topic of continuing study. This research examines pollinator abundance and diversity in two turfgrass environments (golf courses and home lawns) and whether populations are affected by the establishment of pollinator-friendly habitat. Sites adjacent to managed green spaces were selected based on site suitability for management and monitored monthly from July through October 2018 for insect pollinators using a combination of sweep nettin… Show more

“…Research in recent years in pollinator‐friendly spaces (e.g., flowering bee lawns) has increased. Including flowering forbs or bulbs in turfgrass systems or adjacent to pollinator‐friendly spaces are potential methods to support pollinator foraging (Billeisen et al., 2022; Braun & Patton, 2022; Braun et al., 2022; Lane et al., 2019; Lerman et al., 2018; Ramer & Nelson, 2020; Ramer et al., 2019; Wisdom et al., 2019; Wolfin, 2020; Table 1). Results also suggest that golf courses are more supportive of pollinators than residential and industrial areas.…”

“…Many cool‐season and warm‐season low‐input turfgrass options may be suitable, depending on location and site expectations. This includes fine fescues and tall fescue for cool‐season turfgrasses (Braun et al., 2020; Braun, Watkins, Hollman, & Patton, 2022; DeBels et al., 2012; Braun & Patton, 2022) and specific cultivars or classification types (i.e., Kentucky bluegrass) of other cool‐season turfgrass species (Braun, Bremer, et al., 2022a, 2022b; Diesburg et al., 1997; Law et al., 2016; Watkins et al., 2011, 2014). This includes buffalograss, blue grama [ Bouteloua gracilis (Willd.…”

“…Although turfgrass is highly prevalent in urban areas, studies of wild ower habitat in turfgrass are relatively few compared to that in agricultural systems (Billeisen et al 2022, Dale et al 2020, Frank and Shrewsbury 2004, Braman et al 2002. Of these studies, even fewer examine changes in arthropod taxa more than one year following habitat establishment Shrewsbury 2004, Braman et al 2002).…”
