/ Guidelines for implementation of the National Environmental Policy Act state that environmental impact statements (EISs) shall use "appropriate graphics." We examined one component of graphics, typography, identifying applicable criteria from the literature and applying them to 150 EISs prepared by seven agencies. We found that the EISs ranged widely in typographic quality. The average EIS met fewer than seven of ten criteria; 12% were considered unreadable. The results suggest that weak typography may seriously limit public review of EISs. Agencies are encouraged to make typography a serious component of their public participation programs.

De hecho, esta misma autora, junto con Barnard y Wilcox (1978), explican que el formato de un texto es también muy importante en las tareas de copia, pues se emplea menos tiempo en copiar de un texto al que se ha dado el formato adecuado, que de otro con menor claridad en su presentación.…”

ResumenThe article presented focuses on a linguistic unit rarely studied by authors: the paragraph. This is a solid reason to make us contribute to cast light on this matter, and that is the cause for the research we are informing on these pages. It starts with the inventory of definitions that, about this unit, some linguists propose, as well as those collected in linguistic dictionaries, current Spanish and other language dictionaries, and also far-off time Spanish dictionaries. As a result of these consultations, we may conclude that, except for the linguists' proposals, there is no accuracy in the presented definitions, which are based on merely formal aspects. The problem the previous statement brings is that the marks that today help to identify the different paragraphs of a text have not always existed, as the oíd manuscripts display its writing in compact blocks. Nevertheless, it is not acceptable the view of the paragraph as a modern invention, since there is a reach repertoire of arguments which support the idea that the paragraph is a linguistic unit whith a psychological correlate. It seems as if in oíd language the paragraphs were marked by linguistic rather than graphic devices, and this leads to a less noticeable división into paragraphs than in our days. Our article finishes with the defense of a hypothesis according to which the present procedures about the marking of the paragraphs would have been born to make the changes of the paragraph more visible and, on this way, avoid making a greater effort to decode and interpret texts. IntroducciónEn las páginas que siguen nos hemos fijado como objetivo analizar algunos de los aspectos que atañen al párrafo, por constituir éste una unidad textual que apenas ha sido investigada, y por la que los lingüistas han mostrado, por lo general, un interés muy escaso. Tal vez ese menoscabo u olvido tenga su origen en la dificultad que acarrea su estudio, habida cuenta de que se trata de una unidad cuyos límites no son tan claros como, por ejemplo, los de la oración. Por ello, la mayoría de los diccionarios han incluido, entre sus hojas, definiciones que se han atenido a criterios exclusivamente formales, que en muchos casos no reflejan la sustancia de lo definido.
