“…However, at pressures exceeding the Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL) of these anvil materials, elastic analysis is no longer valid. Therefore, a recently developed simulation-based methodology is required to construct the stress-strain behavior of the material [21]. In this method, a material model is first calibrated for the anvil plates at similar pressures and strain rates using the symmetric PSPI configuration shown in Fig.…”

“…The experimental gas guns at Brown University have been described previously [e.g., [14][15][16][17]. The recently established powder gun set up at Caltech for PSPI at high-pressure, and the tools for measuring normal and transverse motion, are described elsewhere [21,22]. Figure 1 shows the two types of target configurations.…”

“…In this work, we present and examine the results from pressure-shear experiments conducted on WC in the range of 9-37 GPa, using the gas gun facilities at Brown University [14] and a powder gun facility at Caltech [20,21]. Material models have been developed to account for the inelastic behavior of WC both for strength and damage beyond its HEL.…”

“…In this Letter, we report the measurement of the pressure dependent dynamic strength behavior of α and ϵ iron under quasi-isentropic loading conditions, using the recently developed sandwiched high-pressure-pressure shear plate impact [21] (HP-PSPI) technique. Experiments are conducted on iron at pressures ranging from 10 to 42 GPa and a constant compressive and shearing strain rate of 10 5 s −1 .…”

“…Because of plasticity within the anvil material above its Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL), conventional elastic analysis of extracting strength from transverse velocity profiles is not feasible. For this reason, we conduct finite element simulations via ABAQUS/Explicit [31] and match simulated velocities with the experimental measurements [21,32] to extract a material model for the iron sample. In particular, the peak transverse velocity is directly related to the strength and flow behavior of iron and thus we determine simulation parameters to match peak velocities of the experimental data.…”
